What you should know about Iron Contraindications

The iron absorption is important, however, it will react different in each person with different medical conditions, learn more about iron contraindications below:

The first contraindication is Hemochromatosis. Hemochromatosis or hereditary hemochromatosis is a genetic disorder affecting the body’s ability to regulate iron absorption. If left untreated, Hemochromatosis can lead to severe consequences, causing an accumulation of iron in various organs and potentially resulting in life-threatening conditions.

Treatment for hemochromatosis involves management of complications, avoidance of supplemental iron and appropriate vaccinations for hepatitis A and B.

The second contraindication is Thalassemia. Thalassemia is also known as Mediterranean anemia, or Cooley’s Anemia. It is a genetic blood disease. People born with this disease cannot make normal hemoglobin (anemia) which is needed to produce healthy red blood cells.

Anemia from thalassemia isn’t caused by a lack of iron, so supplements might actually cause more harm for people with the condition.

Nowadays, drugs designed to remove excess iron (iron chelators) have significantly changed the prognosis of thalassemia.
